Services Provided to Schools

The Center for Indoor Environments and Health has actively worked with school districts and State and Local Health Departments at specific school sites to improve the environment where the school building's condition has contributed to occupants experiencing concerning health symptoms.

Overall Problem Assessment

  • Develop strategy for school indoor air quality program
  • Provide education and guidance on indoor air quality and health
  • Review and comment on current plans to address indoor air quality in the school, including industrial hygiene and/or environmental assessments and planned engineering activities

Health Assessment (approach varies on circumstances in the school)

  • Provide school nurse guidance on tracking symptom complaints
  • Review, organize and interpret health information available from school health personnel
  • Regular interviews with children with known asthma
  • Conduct and evaluate teacher health surveys
  • Provide respiratory testing at the school building (in conjunction with health surveys)
  • Clinical Evaluations (a part of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Building Assessment

  • Evaluate the current status of the school through a walk-through
  • Review of data collected by other consultants including industrial hygiene and engineering contractors
  • Develop report with recommendations
  • Environmental sampling and analysis (if indicated)

Remediation Planning and Oversight

  • Recommend interventions
  • Provide guidance on protecting occupants from exposures including during construction
  • Suggest sources of available engineering resources

Risk Communication

  • Facilitate communications with staff, teachers, parents and students
  • Consult to community physicians, including pediatricians
  • Participate in educational forums for the school community

Directions

The Center for Indoor Environments and Health is located in the Dowling North Building of the UConn Health Center on the third floor.

  • From Points East and West of Farmington, take I-84 to Exit 39. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Route 4 east (Farmington Ave.) Stay in left lane for 0.6 miles through two sets of lights. At the third light, turn right into the Health Center's main campus. Pass pond on the left. At first light go right. At first stop sign go right again. Dowling Building North will be directly in front of you on the left. EAP offices are located on the top floor.
  • From Points South of Farmington, take Route 9 north to Exit 32 at its intersection with I-84 west. This left-handed exit places you directly onto Exit 39 of I-84 westbound. Proceed as above, turning right at the first traffic light onto Route 4 East, etc.
