Adoption Assistance Program

All adoptive families face adjustments as a lifelong process.
Many times the difficulties that arise are more than a family could be expected to handle alone.
Sometimes, outside help is needed.

What is the AAP?

The Adoption Assistance Program is a confidential assessment, brief counseling and referral service available to all adoptive families. The AAP recognizes adoption as a lifelong process. While adoption is a wonderful way to build a family, we know that families may face challenges. Whether you have a simple question or are seeking support around something more difficult, we are here to guide you.

Our services include:

Assessment and Brief Counseling

Recognizing that every family is unique, our assessment process will help us tailor recommendations that are designed to support family functioning and strengthen family bonds.

Referrals

To adoption-sensitive and competent professionals and other adoption resources.

In-Home Support and Case Management

Case management services connect families to community based resources and provide advocacy and ongoing assessment of need. In-home services provide a personalized care plan designed to empower families to parent with confidence.

Information and Education

Website with adoption related links, workshops and trainings for parents, professionals and educators, and a lending library of resources designed for parents and professionals.

Concerns we help families with:

  • Bonding and attachment
  • Birth family connections
  • Child development in the context of adoption
  • Childhood trauma
  • Grief and loss

Who is eligible for AAP services?

The program is designed to meet the needs of families who have adopted children from DCF’s legal custody. On a limited basis, the AAP director may waive eligibility criteria so that additional families may be served.

Who may call the AAP?

Any adoptive family member may contact the AAP, no matter how recent or how long ago the adoption took place. To speak with a Social Worker trained in adoption issues, call us toll free at: 877-679-1961.

Is the AAP confidential?

The AAP is a voluntary and confidential service. Information is never released without your written permission or as deemed necessary by law.

What is the cost of the AAP?

There is no cost to you or your family member for AAP services. If you are referred to an outside resource or service, the cost may be offset by your insurance.
