The Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) Clinic of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center provides a series of services that are from highly specialized to mandatory by regulatory federal or state agencies.
OEM Clinic Services
Our Specialty OEM Diagnostic Clinic serves as a premier regional resource providing specialty diagnostic and treatment services for complex medical cases requiring a multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of unusual complex illnesses related to the workplace or due to environmental exposures.
- Medical toxicology services are also available at the UCHC through the CT Poison Control Center that is housed at the Farmington campus of the University of Connecticut.
- Patients can be referred for consultation or for continuing care.
- Timely reports are provided to attorneys, employers and insurance companies involved.
- Disability evaluations, Independent Medical Evaluations and second opinion medical evaluations are some of the services offered.
Pre-placement Evaluations, Surveillance and Regulatory Compliance Services are provided to over 200 private employers, state agencies and municipalities throughout the state of CT. Compliance with federal and state regulations including OSHA, DOT and state PA 89-90 are part of our activities.
- We have experienced professionals providing pre-placement baseline health screenings, including services for many fire departments following the NFPA 1582 standard on medical requirements.
- Hazardous materials periodic evaluations and clearances for the use of industrial respirators are some of the available services.
- Hearing Conservation Programs are available for those requiring an audiogram performed by a NIOSH trained and certified professional.
- Other services available are Fitness For Duty Evaluations, Return to Work Evaluations, Functional Capacity Assessment using the modified Blankenship Protocol, Medical Review Officer activities for drug screening obtained following forensic chain of custody procedures, NIDA referred urine screenings for illicit drug testing and breath alcohol testing by certified professionals.
- Industrial hygiene workplace monitoring and recommendations for corrective actions offered through a certified industrial hygienist.
- Medical monitoring programs for Tuberculosis screening and treatment of latent tuberculosis infection according with CDC recommendations and immunization services for adults, including on site immunizations when requested (hepatitis A and B, rabies, varicella, measles-mumps-rubella, influenza, tetanus-diphtheria), following the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines.
- Certified spirometry and personal respirator fit testing are also available.
- We offer expert individualized consultation on the design of screening programs and on compliance with current regulatory requirements, tailored to your organization's needs.
- The OEMC ensures up-to-date standards of medical care provided by a team of highly trained personnel with a vast experience in the occupational health field.
We provide prompt diagnosis and treatment to the specific injury in order to resolve the employees' problem and expedite their return to work.

- The OEMC is an integral part of the University of Connecticut Health Center and as such has a full array of expert consultants in areas as Rehabilitation, Orthopedics and Pulmonary Medicine readily available and selectively utilized by us.
- We work closely with insurers and participants in many Connecticut Workers' Compensation Managed Care Plans.
Specialty Clinics
The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinical staff has extensive experience in providing a broad range of consulting services for business, government, labor and the community.
- Combining our services with our consulting services provides employers with a truly comprehensive occupational health and safety approach to the workplace.
- Consulting services are based on preventive philosophy, to eliminate or reduce the risk of workplace injury and illness and to enhance worker health and productivity.
- Examples of consulting services are: environmental health surveys and research services; regional resource for the investigation, treatment and control of outbreaks of work-related illness and disease related to environmental exposures; workplace health service audits and recommendations; audit services for employee health services; implementation of programs for animal handlers.
Registered nurses, nurse practitioner and board certified physicians in Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine (Preventive Medicine) staff the OEM Clinic.
The OEM Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on weekends and major holidays.
